Justification comes to us freely through the merits of Christ.  This word freely was also used by Christ in another context, when He said, “They hated Me without a cause” (John 15:25).  Does not this shed an attractive light upon the idea of free justification?  It proves once and for all that our justification has nothing to do with us and anything we can or may do, for there is no more cause in us why God should justify us than there was cause in Christ why He should be hated.  No, there is no cause whatsoever in us; the reason for our salvation must lie hidden in the bosom of God’s eternal love and His sovereign purpose.  He appointed the way by which we should be ransomed through Christ’s redeeming blood, and receives us unto Himself because of His gracious, saving work.
