The Second Commandment

The Second Commandment contains not just the precept only, but also a reason for the law: “For I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me, and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me and keep My commandments.”

The concept of God as a jealous God is largely lost in our day of religious effeminacy, but it is one of the most vital importance.  God is jealous of His prerogatives, jealous of the worship that belongs to Him, and jealous over the affections of His people, even as a husband for his wife.  So great is this jealousy that He will visit the father’s iniquity upon three to four generations of the children, but will show mercy unto thousands of generations of those that love Him and obey His commandments.
