Drawing upon the teachings of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount, John solemnly informs us that it is no small misdemeanor to hate our brethren: “Whosoever hateth His brother is a murderer.”  This is precisely what our Lord taught, when He announced that he who is angry in his heart at another without a cause has committed murder, and that he who calls his brother a fool is in danger of hell fire.   John takes it even a step farther, by informing us that no murderer has eternal life abiding within him; in other words, he has never been born again.  He has never partaken of that life which is from above.  Otherwise, he could not be walking in a fashion that is so utterly contrary to the teaching and example of our Lord and Master.
