The council agreed, and now the leaders of God’s chosen people begin to commit deicide, mocking, buffeting, and spitting on the very One Who had given them life and breath.  Behold, God in human flesh smitten, mocked, and spitted on by His creatures!  Surely the heavens must open, and the fire of God devour His tormentors!  But Christ Himself gives not a peep of protest, submitting to indignities humiliating even for a base criminal, because now that He had taken our sins upon Himself by imputation, it was proper that He be treated as a sinner.  As all sinners deserve mockery, hatred, and torment for their sins against God, so Christ suffers it upon Himself, though considered in His own right He was a lamb without blemish and without spot.
